"Smoldering Fires" / Clarence Holbrook Carter
For Mag Pie's Monday Poetry Promp we were given the painting , "Smoldering Fires" by Clarence Holbrook Carter (pictured above). The painting depicts a mother standing on a porch holding her child with a mountain in the background. I chose to write about the love the mother has for her child.
A Mother's Love
from the soil
we live.
the night sky
our great companion.
mountains loomed
by us , protecting us,
smoldering the fires
of our deepest regret and
sorrow with its
majestic beauty.
The land as far reaching as the eye could
see has grown plentiful.
The love of the child I hold in my arms
has proven even more plentiful still,
the beauty in his eyes,
even more breathtaking then the sunsets
I see from my backporch swing.
This mother's love is for you
my child.
whenever needed, always available -
each dawn, each day, each night as long
as I stay standing on this earth
I will be with you , loving you still
and when the angels carry me home
to the heavens
I will be wih you, loving you still.
